Appoquinimink grad turns in record-breaking performance

Junior Latazah Coleman, a first-year transfer from Rider and a native of Middletown, Del. (Appoquinimink High School), was selected as the CAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week Tuesday following a record-breaking performance at the Delaware Open this past Saturday at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. Earlier this season, Blue Hen senior Amira Idris was selected as CAA Field Athlete of the Year for both March 22 and 29.

A psychology major at Delaware, Coleman led the Blue Hens to a first place team finish at the meet as she captured both the 100 meter dash and the 4 x 100 meter relay events.

Coleman made history for the Blue Hens, breaking the program record in the 100 meters as her time of 11.60 eclipsed the previous mark of 11.81 by Dionne Jones in 1990. That time of 11.60 ranks first among CAA competitors currently and is tied for No. 23 on the NCAA East Region qualifying list. Coleman later joined sophomore Tyler Jackson, junior Chelsi Campbell, and sophomore Paige Thompson-Charles to win the 4 x 100 meter relay in a time of 47.92.

In addition to Coleman, also honored Tuesday by the CAA were William & Mary freshman Leia Mistowski (Women’s Track Athlete of the Week), UNCW senior Cameron Shaw (Men’s Track Athlete of the Week), Northeastern sophomore Kyle Darrow (Men’s Field Co-Athlete of the Week), and William & Mary junior Brian Waterfield (Men’s Field Co-Athlete of the Week).

Delaware will continue action this week as the Blue Hens compete at the Legacy Classic hosted by Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. on Apr. 17-18.
